Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani is a Union Minister for Human Resource Development and a Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha in India. She belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is a Union Minister in Narendra Modi’s Cabinet. Smriti is also a successful television actor, model and small screen producer before she became involved in active politics.

Family & Early Life

Smriti Irani was born in a Punjabi-Bengali family. She is the eldest of three sisters.

She tried modelling and was a finalist in the Femina Miss India 1998 pageant. The stint in modelling has helped Irani pursue a career in acting. She featured as a host on “Ooh La La La”, but her major success came in Ekta Kapoor’s “Kyunti Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” in which she played Tulsi Virani, the daughter-in-law. She turned into a small screen producer and has produced shows like “Virrudh” and “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan”.

Smriti Irani is married to her childhood friend Zubin Irani, a Parsi, and has two children - son Zohr and daughter Zoish.


Smriti Irani became a politician in 2003 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Even while pursuing her acting career simultaneously, Irani has held important positions in BJP like national secretary of party, All India Presidetn of the BJP Mahila Morcha and BJP’s Vice-President.

2014 Elections

Smriti Irani contested from the Amethi constituency in the 2014 elections. She contested against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party’s Kumar Vishwas in the elections. Rahul Gandhi is the sitting MP and a two-time MP representing Amethi constituency. On 16 April 2014, Irani filed her nomination papers at Gauriganj district headquarters.

Smriti Irani lost to Rahul Gandhi in the election and came in second place. She however managed to reduce the margin of victory of Rahul Gandhi compared to the 2009 elections.

Before proceeding to file her nomination papers, she prayed at a local temple and also spoke at a road show.

In a television debate, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has used abusive and derogatory language against Smriti Irani. The comment was condemned by BJP. Smriti Irani has sent a legal notice to Nirupam subsequently for “gross defamation”. December 20, 2012

Opposition devising conspiracies to tarnish image of NDA government
Smriti Irani said the opposition parties are devising conspiracies to tarnish the image of the NDA government. Addressing a workshop by NGO Society Against Conflict and Hate on March 7, Irani said that the recent controversies were a result of political vendetta against the BJP government. Members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) attended the workshop.
