Shiv Sena

Shiv Sena, the Army of Shiv, is a regional political party in India with a strong hold in the state of Maharashtra. It was formed by Bal Thackeray on June 19, 1966. Bal Thackeray's son Uddhav Thackeray is the current chief of the party.

On 30 November 2015, Shiv Sena in this mouthpiece Saamana said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should make it mandatory to take oath on the Constitution, replacing the holy books. In its editorial of Saamana, Shiv Sena said that the constitution should be the sacred book for people of all religions and that all religions are equal before the law.

In its mouthpiece Saamna, Shiv Sena, on 5 December 2015, said that the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will increase by many folds as soon as he takes the responsibility of construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya into his own hands.

Shiv Sena during 2009 Maharashtra Assembly Elections

Shiv Sena took Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its alliance during the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections. According to the alliance deal announced on September 19, 2009, Shiv Sena will contest 169 of the 288 Assembly seats, while the BJP will contest from the other 119.

In the 2009 Parliament elections, Shiv Sena contested in 22 constituencies and won 11 seats to the Lok Sabha.

Shiv Sena strongly opposes Indo-Pak cricket matches. On 21 December 2012, Shiv Sena has announced that it would organise protests at all the venues where India and Pakistan are scheduled to play cricket in the Dec-Jan cricket series.
