Sanjay Dutt is a famous Bollywood film actor. He is a former Samajwadi Party's candidate from the Lucknow constituency.
Manyata is his wife.
Sanjay Dutt was arrested and later granted bail for his connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. He has spent nearly 16 months, as an undertrial before being released on bail in 1996.
On July 31, 2007, he was sentenced to a jail term of six years for illegal possession of firearms acquired from terrorist acquaintances, who were responsible for the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts by a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court. He was, however, "cleared of terrorism conspiracy charges in the blasts."
On August 2, 2007, Dutt was shifted from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail to the high security Yerawada Jail in Pune. Dutt was lodged in Special Cell 2 in the jail and had a sleepless first night there.
On November 27, 2007, Dutt was granted bail by the apex court. He is out on merely on bail following his conviction in the blasts case but his conviction stands.
On 25 February 2016, Sanjay Dutt was released from Yerwarda Prison about 8 months in advance. He was exempted from completing the rest of his sentence on account of his good behavior.
In February 09, Sanjay Dutt, accompanied by his wife Manyata and SP Amar Singh started his poll campaign in Lucknow on February 18, 2009. He went to meet Captain Rizvi's family staying in the Jopling Road locality with whom his late actor father Sunil Dutt used to stay when he worked as an anchor with the All India Radio (AIR). On March 5, 2009 he moves SC to allow him to contest elections and stay on his conviction under the Arms Act in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. Under the Representation of the People Act, anyone sentenced to more than two years' imprisonment is barred from contesting elections till a court of law stays the conviction and sentence.
