Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi (Death: May 21 at Sri Perambadur, Tamil Nadu, India) is the former Indian Prime Minister. He is the son of India’s first women Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi is his wife.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign. He is laid to rest at the ‘Vir Bhumi’ memorial in New Delhi. Sri Lankan militant group Liberation Tigers for Tamil Ealam is found to have master minded the incident. The Madras High Court has issued a death warrant against LTTE Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran in connection with the killing.

In 2007, it was reported that Kumaran Padmanathan, LTTE’s logistic mastermind in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, who was reportedly arrested in Thailand, was freed after he paid a bribe of 20 million dollars to Thai police.

Seven prisoners - Perarivalan, Murugan, Santhan, Nalini, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran are serving life-term sentences in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

In 2014, Tamil Nadu had proposed to release the convicts in "consultation with the Centre".

On 2 December 2015, a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court of India led by Chief Justice of India HL Dattu, rejected Tamil Nadu's arguments that the seven prisoners should not be robbed of their hope to be freed on remission. The bench observed that the diabolic act of the killers of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi shattered the great faith of an entire country and they do not even deserve a ray of hope that they will be released one day. The majority judgement further laid down the law that the Centre, and not the State government will have the primacy in deciding whether remission should be granted to life-term convicts in the cases which concerned the CBI or any Central agency.
