Pranab Mukherjee as President

Pranab Mukherjee is the 13th President of India. He won the 2012 Presidential Election held on July 19.

The counting was held on July 22. Pranab received 7,13,763 votes out of a total votes valued at 10,47,971. Pranab’s rival in the election PA Sangma received 3,15,987 votes.

Pranab Mukherjee’s first visit to West Bengal as President

After assuming office as the President of India, President Pranab Mukherjee went on a four-day visit to West Bengal from September 14, 2012. The President is welcomed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the airport. He later took the guard of honour. On September 15, Mukherjee addressed the 58th annual convocation of IIT-Kharagpur. He has spent some time in morning on September 16 at his residence in Dhakuria of South Kolkata. His convoy reached at 10 am and Pranab came out of his car waving at the waiting media persons and locals. The President is received by his son Abhijit.

Death Petitions

In September 2012, Ajmal Kasab, the lone perpetrator in the Mumbai terror attacks has filed a mercy petition. Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the mercy petition of Ajmal Kasab who was subsequently hanged on 21 November 2012.

There are 11 pending mercy petitions before the President of India. The petitions include the Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru.

On 4 January 2013, President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the second mercy petition after assuming office as the President. He rejected the mercy petition of Saibanna Ningappa Natikar, who is lodged at the Central Prison at Hindalga, Belgaum in Karnataka. The death sentence of Saibanna was confirmed by a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on April 21, 2005. He was a life convict for the murder of his first wife. While on parole, he killed his second wife and his daughter suspecting her fidelity.


President Pranab Mukherjee felicitated 92-year-old archaeologist C Govindarajanar with the Tolkappiyar Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Tamil studies. The awards were conferred on 21 December 2012 at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Govindarajanar’s work has led to the identification of Kannaki Temple in Tamil Nadu. The President also conferred Kural Pitam Award for 2008-09 to French professor Francois Gros. Young Scholar Awards were also conferred on A Lakshmi Duttai, Dr S Madhavan, Dr M Ramakrishnan and Dr S Sentamizhpavai for their excellence in Tamil studies.

President Pranab Mukherjee has arrived in Hyderabad to spend his week-long winter sojourn. He was received by Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and other top bureaucrats. The President inspected a guard of honour and accepted bouquets from Ministers, MPs and legislators. He will stay at the Rashtrapati Nilayam in Bolaram. Dec 26, 2012

President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the World Telugu Conference in Tirumala. He later offered prayers at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala. This is Pranab Mukherjee’s second visit to Tirumala after he was elected to the highest office. Dec 27, 2012

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to AP State Reorganization Bill 2014 (Telangana Bill) granting the formation of Telangana state. He also signed the ordinance allowing President’s rule in Andhra Pradesh. Mar 1, 2014

President Pranab Mukherjee hosted a banquet for the US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the people of India and United States have always viewed each other as friends. He expressed happiness that the two nations are deepening strategic, security and defence cooperation. Jan 25, 2015

UPA Presidential Candidate

He was the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)’s choice for President of India. UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has announced that Pranab Mukherjee is their choice for the next President of India.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the UPA’s offer and thanked his colleagues for nominating him. He says that he accepts the offer in all humility. As far as the next Finance Minister is concerned, Pranab said that the decision is up to the Congress President and Prime Minister.

The following parties have officially announced their support to having Pranab Mukherjee as the next President of India.

  • Indian National Congress - Party president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has announced that Pranab Mukherjee is their choice for the next President of the country. Party spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi hails decision and says he is the ideal choice.
  • Samajwadi Party - Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav says party would support Pranab’s candidature
  • Bahujan Samaj Party - Party chief Mayawati supports Pranab and says that he is a serious and deserving candidate for the post.
  • Janata Dal United - Shivanand Tiwari says Pranab Mukherjee should be elected with consensus
  • Rashtriya Janata Dal - Lalu Prasad Yadav says all parties should unanimously elect Pranab

Against Pranab Mukherjee

Pranab is the not the first choice for the next India’s President for the following parties.


Pranab Mukherjee has filed his nomination for the 2012 Presidential Election on June 28, 2012. Four sets of nomination papers were submitted. A number of politicians of the UPA coalition and others including Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav were present with Pranab when he submitted the nomination papers.


Pranab Mukherjee began campaigning on June 30. His campaigning will go on till July 15.


Pranab’s rival PA Sangma has sought for the rejection of Pranab Mukherjee’s nomination since he is still the chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute. As per the rules, a person contesting in the Presidential Election should not hold any office of profit. However, Pranab Mukherjee had resigned as the Chairman on June 20 itself.
