Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician who has been Chief Minister of Bihar since February 2005. He was Union Minister in the Government of India, previously. He belongs to the Janata Dal (United) Party.

In October 2008, he approved Rs 197 crore for reconstruction, strengthening and breach closure of Kosi embankment.

Nitish Kumar urged the Central Government for action against MNS for attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra and also asked it to safeguard citizen’s rights.

In September 2012, referring to the Biharis as infiltrators remarks of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, Nitish Kumar described Raj Thackeray as a deranged person who would do anything for publicity.

Adhikar Yatra

Nitish Kumar kicked off the ‘Adhikar Yatra’ on September 24, 2012 demanding the center to accord special category status to Bihar. He has already said that the special category status was a matter of right for Bihar and that they are not begging.

2014 General Elections

2015 Assembly Elections

Nitish Kumar, along with Lalu Prasad Yadav and Congress defeated Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies and formed the government in Bihar.

On 26 November 2015, Nitish Kumar announced that the ban of alcohol in Bihar from 1 April 2016. It was one of the election promises made by Nitish Kumar. The announcement was made at an official function to mark Prohibition Day.



Referring to the governments led by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, Nitish Kumar alleged that the governments of ‘husband and wife’ had ruined Bihar. At a public meeting in Purnia on 6 October 2012, Nitish Kumar said between 1990 and 2005, there was no development in the state. He also condemned the violence during his recent ‘Parivartan yatra ’.
