Kanimozhi is a Rajya Sabha member representing Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK). She is currently a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
She is the daughter of DMK patriarch and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.
On October 15, 2008, Kanimozhi submitted her resignation to the Rajya Sabha membership in line with the decision of an all-party meeting to put pressure on the Central Government to call for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
DMK has considered to ask the UPA Government for a Ministerial position for Azhagiri in the new Government.
Kanimozhi has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection to some scams related to the 2G Spectrum Scam. She has been released on bail.
On October 3, 2012 Kanimozhi has been nominated to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
