Islamic State is a Salafi militant organization in Syria and Iraq. They are also called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham or Daesh.
On 6 March 2016, Islamic State militants carried out a suicide truck bombing south of Baghdad, Iraq that killed 61 people.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the terror attacks in Paris on the evening of November 13, 2015. The Paris attacks are a series of coordinated terror attacks that began at 21:16 CET. Six mass shootings and three separate suicide bombings killed at least 129 poeple and injured at least 352. In one of the attacks, the attackers took hostages and engaged in a stand-off with police which ended at 00:58 on November 14, 2015.
In November 2015, after the Paris Attacks, the Islamic State has released a video suggesting that New York is a potential target of attacks. On 18 November 2015, both the FBI and the New York Police said that they are aware of the video and said there were no specific threats. A Deputy NYPD commissioner said that though there is no specific threat, they will remain at a heightened state of vigilance. The FBI said that they would fully investigate the threat. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that New York city would not be intimidated.
On 2 December 2015, two "supporters" of Islamic State carried out mass shooting at San Bernardino in California. Though, the Islamic State have not claimed responsibility of the shooting, they called the two suspects in the shooting, their supporters and martyrs.
On 6 December 2015, IS has carried out a suicide car bomb attack in Aden of Yemen which killed the Governor of Aden along with six others
Several countries are confronting the Islamic State directly. Among those countries which are fighting against ISIS are United States, Russia, United Kingdom, Germany, Syria etc.
On 3 December 2015, the British Parliament has approved bombing of Islamic State militants in Syria. Within few hours of the approval, British warplanes have carried out their first air strikes on IS targets in Syria.
On 4 December 2015, the German Parliament has voted to send military support to the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Syria. The MPs approved the plan for a non-combat role 445 votes to 146. The German support include sending Tornado jets - for reconnaissance - a naval frigate and 1,200 soldiers to the region. This will be Germany's biggest current military operation abroad.
