The Indian National Congress party was founded in 1885. The party’s headquarters is located at 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi.
On 20 December 2012, Congress returned to power in Himachal Pradesh after five years defeating Bharatiya Janata Party. Former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh led the campaign of the party in the legislative assembly elections and emerged victorious from the Shimla (Rural) constituency.
The Indian National Congress party has failed to get a majority in the legislative assembly elections for the third consecutive term in 2012. BJP led by Narendra Modi has received two-thirds majority in the counting which was held on December 20, 2012.
Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Arjun Modhwadia has tendered his resignation taking responsibility for the defeat of the party. He also lost to his BJP rival Babu Bokhiria in Porbandar constituency. Arjun Modhwadia was seeking for his third term from Porbandar and lost by a margin of over 17,000 votes.
Congress makes it clear that it had not promised sub-quota for OBC Muslims. The clarification comes after a newspaper report that said the Congress made the promise of sub-quota had been made in a supplementary manifesto of Congress. On 8 December 2015, the Congress party leaders staged protests in both the houses of Parliament accusing NDA government of pursuing a "vendetta" against the Gandhi family. A judge on Monday, had ordered Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to appear in court in the National Herald case brought by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.
Congress disrupts Parliament for the third consecutive day over the National Herald case. On 9 December, top Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, P Chidambaram, Abhishekh Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal met at 10 Janpath to discuss the party's strategy in Parliament. While Mallikarjun Kharge said that the case was politically motivated, Abhishek Singhvi said that they would fight on all three fronts: magistrate, the apex court, and the political front.
The Congress has asked its party members to submit details about their social media life as part of their bio-data. Party treasurer Motilal Vora has urged its members to give details of their Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. Congress party has termed the claims of ‘India Against Corruption’ member Arvind Kejriwal of corruption against Robert Vadra as false. On 5 October 2012, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters, “These are all false allegations. This has been done under some controversy.” Sandeep Dikshit also came in defence and said that it is wrong to drag a businessman into controversy by making false allegations.
