Guntur district

Guntur district is a district in the Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh. Guntur City is the largest city and the administrative seat of the district. It is situated on the right banks of Krishna River, that separates it from Krishna district and extends till empties into the Bay of Bengal. It is bounded on the south by Prakasam district and on the west by Nalgonda district of the state of Telangana. It has a coastline of approximately 100 km.

Guntur is is the fourth largest city in Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation. It has an estimated population of 48,89,230 as per the 2011 census making it the third most populous district in Andhra Pradesh.

Centre has sent one battalion each from Central Reserve Paramilitary Force (CRPF) and Andhra Pradesh Special Force (APSF) from Hyderabad to maintain the law and order situation in the State after the Parliament approved the Telangana bill. Tsundur massacare

In 1991, eight dalits were killed and several others were injured in an attack at Tsundur village of Guntur district. The attack was allegedly by upper caste people. Houses of several dalits were looted and set afire forcing the familites to flee from Tsundur to adjoining villages. The police filed a chargesheet against 219 people. 33 among those chargesheeted died during the course of trail. Seven people were let off due to lack of evidence by the police. The country’s first ever special court was set up for the trial.

In 2007, the special court sentenced 21 to life imprisonment and 35 others to one year’s rigorous imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs 2,000 each.

On April 22, 2014 a division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court headed by Justice L. Narasimha Reddy has set aside the order of the special court due to lack of evidence.
