Facebook is a social networking website. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his friends in a dorm room at the Harvard university. Facebook has over 1 billion active users. The revenue in the first half of 2011 is 1.6 billion dollars. In December 2015, Facebook is valued at $303 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg is the CEO of the company. As of December 2015, Zuckerberg owned 4 million Class A shares and 422.3 million Class B shares, which have 10 times the voting power of A shares. Combined he held 54 percent of the voting power of the company's shares.

The US Government acknowledged that social networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook are providing helpful information.

Facebook Users

As of October 2012, Facebook has over 1 billion active users.

United States, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Mexico have more people on Facebook than any other countries. 600 million out of 1 billion users access Facebook on mobile.

1 Billion Active Users

Facebook has officially crossed the 1 billion active users mark. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the milestone in a Facebook post on 4 October 2012. According to a fact sheet, the 1 billion milestone came at 12:45 p.m. PT on 14 September 2012. Facebook has 1.13 trillion Likes, 1040.3 billion friend connections, 219 billion photos uploaded, 17 billion location-tagged posts and 62.6 million songs played 22 billion times.

India

A number of Internet users in India are on Facebook. Celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar and Salman Khan have their pages on Facebook and regularly interacts with their fans.

Acquisitions

Facebook purchased 650 technology patents from Microsoft for 550 million dollars. 750 patents from IBM were purchased in March 2012.

Instagram

In 2012, Facebook has acquired mobile photo-sharing app Instagram. The deal was $300 million and 23 million shares and was meant to have closed in the second quarter of 2012. However, the US regulators gave its approval in August. The deal was finally closed on August 31, 2012.

WhatsApp

Facebook acquired WhatsApp on February 19, 2014 five years after it was launched. WhatsApp serves over 450 million monthly active users worldwide, with over 320 million daily active users. Feb 19, 2014

Change in TOS and Privacy Policy

Instagram has announced that it is updating its terms of service and privacy policy which will be effective on January 16, 2013. The change is to bring its TOS and privacy policy in line with Facebook’s policies after it was acquired by the later. The change also gives right to Instagram to sell images and data uploaded to the site to third parties without the uploader’s consent and without having to pay the uploader. The announcement sparked off protests from users.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger is a service provided by Facebook on its website as well as a stand alone application for its users. Facebook allows users to interact with each other by sending and receiving messages on the Facebook messenger.

In December 2012, Facebook has enabled users to create a Facebook messenger account without a Facebook account. The new feature will allow users to use Facebook messenger with a new and a phone number. The new feature is enabled on Facebook’s Messenger app for Android and is expected to rolled out soon to other platforms.

2010

By 2010, Facebook emerged as a power in Internet ad spend.

2012

In September 2012, Facebook has suspended the facial-recognition tool for users in Europe. The move is a response to the recommendations by the Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland last year.

Registered to Vote

Facebook has enabled a new option ‘Registered to Vote’ for its users on September 24, 2012. The option is available under ‘Life Event’ where in users can post to their timeliness on where and why they are voting. The new feature is made available as the 2012 presidential election is just about a month away.

On 10 December 2012, The Facebook social networking site was down briefly for some users because of a technical glitch. The site made a change to its domain name system setup which resulted in some users not being able to reach the site for about 20 minutes.
