Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) is a Political Party largely in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The party is headed by M Karunanidhi. The party has played a key role in the United Progressive Alliance in winning from South India in the 2009 Parliamentary Elections. Sources say the party is thinking of asking as many as 7 ministerial posts in the new cabinet. Upset with Congress for ignoring its dependability and with Congress-DMK talks failing, the DMK has decided not to join the Government but to support it externally.

SC/ST Promotion Reservation Bill

The DMK is opposing the SC/ST Promotion Reservation Bill, which brings reservation for people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tributes in promotions of government jobs. The Party is demanding Other Backwards Castes (OBC) to be included in the bill.

February 18, 2011: DMK enters into an alliance with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly polls. PMK has been allotted 31 assembly seats.

February 16, 2011: DMK says Manmohan Singh’s comments that the coalition politics was being a hindrance to governance will not affect its ties with Congress.
Over 2000 DMK members were arrested after they tried to take out a rally protesting the alleged abduction of over 100 Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka.
