Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (born: December 25, 1926) is the 10th Prime Minister of India. He is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a statesman. After a brief stint as Prime Minister in 1996, Vajpayee headed a coalition government from 19 March 1998 until 19 May 2004. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Lucknow until 2009, and has since retired from active politics.

Personal Biography


Vajpayee was born in an upper-caste family.


Vajpayee is a bachelor with an adopted daughter Namita Bhattacharjee.

Health condition

On February 3, 2009, Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS in the night following respiratory infection and fever. The doctors declared the he developed pneumonia and that his condition is stable. On February 5, 2009, the Doctors said he is showing signs of improvement. On February 6, 08, Vajpayee is put on mechanical ventilator support which continued through February 7, 2009. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, speedy recovery while Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee visited him at the Hospital on February 7, 2009. As of February 8, 2009, AIIMS sources say he is stable and recovering. The nation prayed for his health and well being. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Kalyan Singh visited AIIMS to enquire after him. On February 9, doctors said that his condition remained stable. Angry BJP supporters protested against the Deputy Commissioner Manivannan for allegedly making a false announcement about the death of Vajpayee.

On March 1, 2009, Vajpayee was discharged from AIIMS after his 26 days of stay at the ICU. At the end of March 09, he underwent a regular medical check-up at the AIIMS.

Professional Biography

Political life

Vajpayee political life began when he joined the political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). Vajpayee was detained by police during a protest against British rule in 1942 and during emergency rule imposed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970. He was elected to the Indian Parliament in 1957.

Vajpayee made an official visit to China in June 2003.

In January 09, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who wants to contest upcoming Indian parliament elections from Lucknow, said he would not fight against Vajpayee.

Despite having stepped out of active political life, Vajpayee’s name continued to be in use in the party circles. The BJP, following its no-show in the last Lok Sabha elections, resorted to use his name to attract voters in the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

In December 09, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh apologised in Parliament for Congress MP Beni Prasad Vermas remarks on Vajpayee in the ongoing debate in Parliament on the Liberhan Commission Report.

In April 2010, Advani’s blog reminded of the phone tapping in the past including a press conference of June 25, 1985, on the 10th anniversary of Emergency by Vajpayee. Vajpayee had then referred to large-scale phone tapping that was done during the 19 months of Emergency.

As Indian Prime Minister

Vajpayee became Prime Minister in 1996, but only for 13 days and then regained power as head of a multi-party coalition in 1999.

In November 09, a former Liberhan Commission counsel Anupam Gupta said that dragging the name of Vajpayee in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition was an attempt to shift the focus from the role played by L K Advani.

Agra Summit

The Agra Summit is a historic meeting between the then Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. The summit is reported to have failed because the Pakistani President wanted primacy to Kashmir talks and avoiding terrorism from across the border in the joint statement.

Kargil operation

A book reveals that the Kargil operation was planned well before January 1999 and well before former Vajpayee’s visit to Lahore by road.


In 2015, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was awarded India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.

In December 2015, a block in Afghanistan's new Parliament building was named Atal block in his honor.
